Transforming Malaysia’s Radio Landscape

Airtime Management & Programming Sdn Bhd (AMP) burst into the entertainment scene in 1997 with the launch of hitz.fm (then known as HITZ FM) as Malaysia’s first-ever formatted radio station. That introduction paved the way for four more English radio brands, namely MIX FM, Light & Easy, TalkRadio and Classic Rock – to be launched by AMP in the same year.
English-speaking Malaysians, for decades having only one government-owned English station and later a few bi-lingual services both public and private, were suddenly spoilt for choice.

Over the one year period, demand grew for radio content in Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese, as radio listeners who were exposed to AMP’s English brands wanted the same formats but in other major local languages. This compelled AMP to make changes to its lineup, and swapping two of its English FM brands, namely Classic Rock and TalkRadio, for ERA FM (Bahasa Malaysia) and MY FM (Chinese) respectively.

Almost overnight AMP became not just the biggest private radio operator in the country, but by mid 1999, the most profitable as well. As advertisers took note of the creative ways customers could be reached via AMP’s radio brands via multiple platforms – the rest of the industry also took notes on how to run successful radio operations.

Within a decade, similarly-run and operated radio broadcasting companies have emerged, more often than not, peopled by those who were trained by AMP. This means that AMP has reached one of its main objectives from day one of its operations in 1996 – to help grow the radio industry.

The other main objective was to create and promote fresh, new, local radio talent. This too has been achieved as every radio brand under AMP’s management has made household names of its announcers, primarily those doing breakfast (6 – 10am) and Drive (4 – 8pm) shifts.

Now in its 13th year of operations, AMP has many milestones it can count as part of its vibrant history. Pioneers in Malaysia for format radio, pioneers in providing satellite radio content (nine FM services in addition to the six exclusive radio channels, available on all ASTRO decoders in Malaysia and Brunei), pioneers in utilizing LIU (local insertion units) for regional advertisers and pioneers in utilizing Dynamic RDS (Radio Data System) as a commercial tool – these are just some of the achievements AMP has chalked up in a little more than a decade.
